Double

It’s a tricky thing, judging a comic that’s as far along as The Wicked + The Divine. Based on what creators Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie have said about its intended length, issue #29 lands around two-thirds of the way through the series. In a medium where a lot stories don’t end but rather change hands, renumber and continue onward for decades, there are two obvious comparisons at this point. The first is Image Comics stablemates like Sex Criminals and Saga, now similarly a few years deep into their run. These books tend to take a month or two off between arcs, and then essentially relaunch with a brand-new status quo — a time jump, or a major change to the cast. That’s not really the case for WicDiv #29. It does mark the beginning of a new arc, “Imperial Phase (Part II),” but, as that name implies, it’s the second part of a larger story, and the issue reads like a continuation. Jamie S. Rich and George Kambadais’ “The Double Life of Miranda Turner” #2, is charming and fun, with bright cartoony visuals that pop with boundless energy. The titular Miranda Turner — actress and superhero “The Cat” — with her dead former superhero sister Lindy acting as a ghost sidekick and guide to crimefighting, is in a bit over her head with the whole “superhero thing.” But she has the witty banter down pat, and her methods — though unconventional — get the job done. In this issue, Miranda’s worlds have collided as her superhero persona is needed when things start going horribly wrong on the set of her play. Rich has some fun characters on hand, and the dialogue between Miranda and Lindy is especially fun, with Linda playing the straight man (for the most part) to Miranda’s more freewheeling persona. Rich has set up an obvious villain in stylist/make-up artist Moon, but the way he’s written is so delicious that it’s not a bad thing to know where the story is going. The way tha

Monkeybrain Comics’ digital comics are usually of high quality, so when a new series debuts it’s always worth taking a look. This week brought the debut of “The Double Life of Miranda Turner” #1 by Jamie S. Rich and George Kambadais, and it isn’t just good, it’s great. This charmer of a comic has an already detailed backstory, an interesting world setup, and a great deal of fun. The basic thrust of “The Double Life of Miranda Turner” is a winner in its own right. Miranda’s sister Lindy used to be the superhero known as the Cat, until someone killed her and stole the mystic rune that gave Lindy her powers. Now Miranda is wearing the outfit of the Cat and fighting crime, aided by the ghost of Lindy that only Miranda can see, all in an effort to find her sister’s murderer. If that sounds grim, don’t worry. In the hands of Rich, there’s a surprisingly light touch to this comic. The first “Hellboy” comic I picked up was “Hellboy in Mexico,” released earlier this year and I picked it up because it was a self-contained single with art by Richard Corben. Oh, I’ve always planned to go back and buy the “Hellboy” and “BPRD” collections, but a one-off comic with Corben on art is hard to resist. And, here’s another one before the year is out. Those folks at Dark Horse must like us or something. “Double Feature of Evil” is an entertaining horror comic with a strong lead story and a funny back-up story, both framed as films being shown in an abandoned movie house with corpses in the audience. The lead story has Hellboy investigating a house that makes its owner kill people. The pacing is slow and meticulous, allowing for Corben’s art to raise the tension. It’s a story of mood, contrasting the seeming normalcy of the owner with the absurdity of his problem. Corben is very good at making ‘normal’ people look creepy or abnormal.
