It is a mistake to believe that under dictatorial rule one can be free within oneself… To imagine a person as an autonomous individual is the biggest delusion. The secret freedom that can supposedly be preserved under despotic rule is nonsense, because one’s own thoughts are never completely one’s own. Philosophers, writers, artists, even scientists not only need encouragement and the public, they need constant stimulation from other people.
