Synopsis
From J-SiS: All her life, Chihaya's dream was to see her model sister become Japan's best... That is, until a quiet, unassuming transfer student named Arata tells her otherwise. A dream, he explains to her, is something she needs to work at herself. Arata plays a competitive version of a traditional Japanese card game--known as Hyakunin Isshu--in a way Chihaya has never seen before. After taking Arata's place in a game, Chihaya discovers she has a passion for it. Now Chihaya wants to become number one in the world, the Queen of Karuta. Chihayafuru won the 2nd Manga Taisho Award. Winner of the 35th annual Kodansha Manga Award for Best Shoujo. Nominated for the 16th (2012) and 20th (2016) Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.

News Chihayafuru Gets Spinoff Manga About Characters' Middle School Years
Manga adapts 4-volume novel series This year's 20th issue of Kodansha's Be-Love magazine announced on Saturday that a Chihayafuru spinoff manga titled Chihayafuru Chūgakusei-hen (Chihayafuru Middle School Arc) in the next issue on October 13. Oto Tōda is drawing the manga. The manga adapts Yui Tokiumi's spinoff novel series for Yuki Suetsugu's Chihayafuru manga. Kodansha released a total of four volumes between 2012 and 2015. The novels feature a series of stories detailing various characters' lives in middle school. (The original manga begins when they are in elementary school and skips to high school.) Suetsugu launched the ongoing manga in Kodansha's Be-Love magazine in December 2007, and Kodansha will publish the 36th compiled volume on November 13. Da Vinci magazine ranked it #7 in its "Book of the Year" list last year. Kodansha has released bilingual editions of the manga's compiled volumes in Japan, and Kodansha Comics is releasing the manga digitally in English.

Chihayafuru, Vol. 4
By Yuki Suetsugu. Released in Japan by Kodansha, serialization ongoing in the magazine Be Love. Released in North America digitally by Kodansha Comics. Translated by Ko Ransom. The sign of a good series is that you care about the characters as if they were real people, and take joy in their triumphs and grieve at their setbacks. This can sometimes backfire, however, when you see the setbacks coming and think to yourself “Oh noooooo!”. The moment I saw Chihaya’s head throb, I knew immediately what was going to happen by the end of the volume, and it hurt. This is why this review is running somewhat late, because I really did not want to read what I knew was going to happen. It comes after a half volume of small triumphs and achievements, as they quality for the National Tournament, win over their faculty adviser, and slowly come together as a team, each character getting a little bit more to do and more for us to identify with. Then I saw that throbbing head. And I said “…she’s sick.” An
