Often creators will tease fans with a clue for an upcoming project whenever an announcement is looming. As an example, writer Steve Orlando tweeted a photo Wednesday night, accompanied by the caption, “Research for a new #DCComics project – announcement soon!”

At first glance, the image of a skeleton outlined in yellow fluorescent lighting doesn’t seem to hold any connection to an existing DC property. However, upon further investigation it’s actually from HBO documentary titled “Dark Light: The Art of Blind Photographers.” That could suggest blind superhero Doctor Mid-Nite, a member of the Justice Society of America.

Introduced in winter 1940-41’s All-Star Comics #3, the JSA’s membership includes Golden Age versions of such heroes as The Flash, Hawkman and Green Lantern. Whereas the heroes of the Justice League is seen as the best the DC Universe has to offer, the Justice Society of America operates more as a family, with mentors and their legacies.

When DC launched the New 52 in 2011, the heroes of the JSA appeared in Earth 2 and Worlds’ Finest. Earth 2 included updated versions of classic heroes The Flash (Jay Garrick) and Green Lantern (Alan Scott), among others, while Worlds’ Finest followed Earth 2’s Huntress and Power Girl as they tried to make their way home from Earth 0. The last volume of Earth 2, renamed Earth 2: Society, ended earlier this year.

DC’s Rebirth era has sprinkled several clues for a return of the Justice Society, beginning with a glimpse of the Golden Age’s Johnny Thunder inside the pages of DC Universe: Rebirth #1 as the adult Wally West reached out to Johnny in a nursing home and begged him to find the Justice Society. Johnny and Jay Garrick also took part in The Flash/Batman crossover “The Button,” so it’s clear DC is laying the groundwork to fully reintroduce the JSA.

The JSA was also a fixture on the second season of The CW’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, with Stargirl, Doctor Mid-Nite, Commander Steel and Hourman guest-starring, and an alternate version of Vixen joining the Legends by season’s end.

If an announcement for a new Justice Society of America comic is coming soon, one place fans can look to for the reveal is next month’s New York Comic Con.
